The Clinician

Stephanie Chesnut, M.A., LMFT – Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I am a graduate of Antioch University New England and holds an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy. I have worked with individuals, couples, and families, to help them overcome the challenges they have faced in their lives.

With individuals, I have experience helping adults and teens going through life changes, experiencing depression, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, and difficulty adjusting to new circumstances. I have worked extensively with survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, helping survivors through an empowerment model to process and heal past emotional wounds.

In my work with couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy and the Gottman Method, two of the most rigorously researched and proven therapy methods for improving connection and intimacy with partners.

Gottman Method Couples Therapy was developed out of this research to help partners:

  • Increase respect, affection, and closeness
  • Break through and resolve conflict when they feel stuck
  • Generate greater understanding between partners
  • Keep conflict discussions calm

Emotionally Focused Therapy is used to:

  • Expand and re-organize key emotional responses
  • Create a shift in partners’ interactional positions and initiate new cycles of interaction.
  • Foster the creation of a secure bond between partners.

I also holds graduate degrees from Dartmouth College and the University of Paris, Nanterre, with additional graduate coursework completed at Trinity College, Dublin.  Before becoming a therapist, I worked as the Assistant Director of the Center for Women and Gender at Dartmouth College and enjoyed engaging with students through advising, programming, and events. In my free time, I enjoy creative writing, photography, and spending time with my family.

Stephanie’s Approach

Every relationship has a beginning, and the relationship you build with your therapist is integral to reaching your goals in therapy. My philosophy is that we are partners on a journey together, but the path forged is unique to you alone. There is no “one size fits all” solution as no one else is living your life. I will work with you to develop goals, to continually refine them, and to help you reach your destination.
